The Story of Lost Photography

Hiiiiiii! I'm Kat, a lgbtqia+ friendly photographer, based in the Roseville, CA area. I love in-depth discussions at local coffee shops about your birth chart, late stage capitalism, and how humbling motherhood is. At the end of the day, I love to put on a show and work on my new hyperfixation hobby. I have been obsessed with macrame, paint by numbers and quilting. If you’re not convinced that I’m basically a 32 year old grandma, then you should know my sourdough starter is older than your parents.

I started photography when I purchased my first digital camera when I was 16 and fell in love with self portraits. The amount of afternoons I spent working out the self timer, the angles, the lighting for my new MySpace profile picture. The older you get the less fun you have; going to college, “grown ups” telling you to get a stable job that pays well, blah blah. In 2016 I earned my BA in History and wanted to work in documentaries. After several jobs turned toxic, (mostly due to my strong sense of justice) and the birth of my son I felt a pull to help other mothers  seal their memories in time.

In 2020, I picked up a camera and started seeing moments in such a different way. Watching my son grow up and change before my eyes has been humbling. I grew up without my mother starting at the age of  7, so there are so many times I wish I could physically see how much my mom loved me. Being able to be transported to a moment that I experienced with all five senses is such a privilege that I want my children to have later in their lives.

I want to remember the smell of the cookies baking in the oven, the flour all over the ground, the music playing on the stereo and the belly laughs we have dancing in the living room. These small moments are the ones that make up life and the ones I want to be able to remember 50 years from now, which is what I want for you too! It’s about how you feel in the moment and capturing it in a way that is authentic to YOU, not trying to get the “perfect” smiles and matching outfits. Your memories should be your own and not a hollow version of what you think they should be.
